Sutton councillors visit London Cancer District

Thirty Sutton councillors visited the London Cancer District on Monday 28th September to see the site first-hand and learn more about plans for its next phase of development, following the approval of planning permission earlier this year.

Hosted by development manager Socius, the visit provided an opportunity for councillors to meet the project team, explore the site and hear how the approved plans will support the continued growth of the London Cancer District as a leading centre for cancer research, treatment and innovation.

Discussions focused on the next stages of the development, the anticipated programme for delivery and the long-term economic and employment opportunities the investment is expected to bring to Sutton and the wider area.

Earlier this year, Sutton Council granted planning permission for the £1 billion expansion of the London Cancer District, led by Aviva Capital Partners and Socius. The plans will deliver around one million sq ft of new laboratory and research space across 12 acres, alongside new public spaces, amenities and affordable homes for approximately 220 key workers.

The expansion is expected to create around 3,000 new jobs, predominantly in research and development, life sciences and related industries. Once fully realised, the wider London Cancer District is expected to support around 13,000 jobs and contribute an estimated £1.2 billion in Gross Value Added to the UK economy.

The London Cancer District is already home to globally recognised institutions including The Institute of Cancer Research and The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, with the wider site bringing together cancer research, treatment and commercial innovation.

As the project moves towards delivery, the development team is also focused on ensuring that the investment creates opportunities for people across Sutton. Commitments include creating more than 200 jobs for local residents who are currently unemployed, providing over 140 apprenticeships and delivering more than 350 weeks of work experience across the project lifecycle.

Steve Eccles, Director at Socius, said:

“It was a pleasure to welcome councillors to the London Cancer District and share more about our plans for the next phase of development. The London Cancer District has an important role to play in advancing cancer research and innovation, while also delivering meaningful benefits for the local community. As we move towards delivery, we look forward to continuing to work closely with the council and local stakeholders to create jobs, develop skills and support long-term economic growth.”

Cllr Barry Lewis, Leader of Sutton Council, said:

“The London Cancer District is an important asset for Sutton and has the potential to bring significant benefits to our residents, our economy and our communities.

“It was great to see so many councillors visit the site and hear more about the next phase of this ambitious project. As the plans move forward, we want to ensure that local people are able to benefit from the opportunities that this investment will create, while further strengthening Sutton’s position as a leading centre for cancer research and innovation.”
